Celebration – change of date to 12 September

We planned to get together at the Clovelly Hotel on September 5 but a lot of people were not be able to make it (plus it’s fathers’ day) so we are changing the date to Sunday 12 September, in the hope that a lot more people can make it.  Still 6pm and under 18s are welcome. There’s a good bistro for those who want to eat.

Also a reminder that the next meeting is Tuesday 14 September at 7pm (at the College) – its going to be a big one for decision-making about the direction of the programme over the next 12 months.  A major challenge facing the Music Ensemble Program  at this time, is the need for more people to become involved on the committee  to fill vacant roles including Secretary, Convenor, and many smaller positions.  Without new parents stepping up, the program will be increasingly hard to manage.  For an overview of what the roles and responsibilities of committee members please go to the committee page.

So come along – on the 12th to celebrate the result from the Bands Festival Fundraiser, and on the 14th to take part in shaping the direction of our excellent programme.

Fabulous result to celebrate

It is so good to be able to tell you that the 2010 effort has surpassed our expectations as we’ve banked $15K for the programme, in the wrap up of the NSW Bands Festival fundraiser.  This fantastic result will enable us to continue to provide fee relief,  purchase musical equipment and continue to add development days for all ensembles. Please attend the next committee meeting Tuesday, September 14 at 7pm at the school to contribute your ideas about growing and enriching our music programme.  We’ll be developing plans for the next 12 months.

Celebrate: Sunday September 5 at the Clovelly Hotel, Clovelly Road at 6pm – probably upstairs – under 18s are welcome – drop by for a drink, for a meal, or for both.

All Welcome

Band Rehearsals next two weeks

Dear Band members,

For the next two weeks I will be away with the Clovelly PS annual QLD tour followed by my first doctorate recital. Murray Jackson will be guest conducting all band rehearsals.

I hope to see you at my recital on August 26 otherwise I will see you when I get back!

Luke

Best fundraising effort ever!

Well – all we can say is a a big fat WOW! for the achievements of last Sunday 8 August – thanks to everyone who helped out. Slammed from 7.30am, but we were ready.  With croissants, coffee, sweets, and soup  + hotdogs and wraps.  First timer student helper Dan  stepped up, and was a blur of fridge-filling, biscuit-serving madness while veterans Brigitta, Zac, Imogen, Luke “lolly-bags” Cruikshank, Colin and Ned, managed to keep it together as the crowds surged towards our irresistable and yummy food…

Our collectively brilliant effort has resulted in another 3.8K in the bank and the cumulative total for 2010 reaching more than$ 12,000 – putting us well in reach of exceeding the 2009 target.  YAY!  Best of all there’s only one more sunday to go – another huge one so let’s pull out all stops to make it count.   Details here or email   mailto:fundraising@rbscmep.net

Another farewell

We’re very sad to be farewelling our choir accompanist Lillian Camphausen, whose family is relocating. Lillian has only been part of our MEP community since the start of 2009 but in that time she’s become so integral not just to the choir but to all MEP activities  that it’s hard to recall how we managed without her – and equally hard to imagine how we’ll do that again once she’s gone. Her contribution to the program has been so significant –  so much enthusiasm for music, so many good ideas,  and so much energy and hard work  to help put them into place – that really, sad as it is to see her go, it’s also just lucky that she’s been with us for even this relatively brief time. Right now it feels particularly lucky that the family’s moving house date fell on the last weekend of the bands festival catering extravaganza and not on the first, as Lillian has been like a force of nature in her contribution to that event – shopping, cooking, and all-round providing – thank you, Lillian! Farewell to her son Colin, too – a fine violinist who will be much missed from the string ensemble and, like his mum, also a committed worker at MEP events – it’s been a pleasure spending time with you!

Meet the Music – concert 3 – this Wednesday!

MEP members who subscribed  to this Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert series will be treated to Divine Dances at 6.30pm on August 11 – that’s this Wednesday. The program includes music by Dvorak, Edwards and Scriabin. If you have tickets but can’t get to the concert, please let us know asap – it’s dreadful if tickets go to waste.

Meet the Music concerts are a great musical experience and also remarkably good value. Subscriptions for the 2011 series will be organised early in term 4.  If you’d like to join other MEP students and families at these concerts next year, keep an eye on this blog for further information or let Donna Masterson (Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts) know – email htcapa’at’rbscmep.net.

2011 Arts Unit Instrumental & Vocal Ensemble Applications now open!

The Arts Unit provide excellent quality and high profile vocal and instrumental music ensembles for talented singers and performers in secondary (Years 8-12) and middle years (Years 4-8).   Applications close Wednesday, September 1.
I have conducted these groups in the past and I would strongly recommend all students audition for these ensembles. They are a fantastic experience.

Two weekends down, two big Sundays to go

Another weekend of catering at the NSW School Bands festival – of which an early highlight was the sale of 54 pre-ordered snacks and lunches to the Compassvale Primary School band who were here visiting from Singapore. They looked and sounded fantastic and we were very happy to provide the fuel that kept them going. So – up go the numbers: 17kg of chicken breast, 5kg of ham, 100s of hotdogs, 200+ chocolate chip cookies, countless muffins, cupcakes and pieces of cake, close to 1000 lolly bags (band member and all-round hard worker Luke Cruickshank is keeping a personal tally of how many he’s made – over 300 at the end of Sunday). And, most important, up goes the amount of money we’ve earned – an estimated $8000 so far. Apart from the core organisers who have been putting in dawn till dusk  hours on this project, a number of families have  been regular contributors in various ways, putting in hours at the venue and bringing along things to sell – many thanks for those good efforts, also to everyone else who’s helped out. Overall though a lot of  people are yet to contribute in any way at all – but it’s not too late! Please take the time to make or buy something for us to sell, or come along and help out at the venue – as we’ve said before, the money raised benefits everyone in the program. For details, check out the fundraising page.

A thank you and a welcome

The thank you is to Vicky Cameron, who has had the hard job of being the MEP’s first admin support person. There have been plenty of challenges for Vicky as the description of what the position involves takes proper shape and as the MEP settles into its new space beneath the hall – thank you Vicky for your dedicated efforts on the MEP’s behalf. Vicky has now resigned so the welcome is to Lidia who has taken the job on – read more about Lidia below.

Hi, my name is Lidia de Simone. I am excited to be starting the admin support position this term for the Music Ensemble Program here at Rose Bay Secondary College.I completed my schooling at

Vaucluse High. Unfortunately we did not have aMusic Ensemble Program within the school while I was there but I think it’s fantastic that these great opportunities exist for the students today.

The program’s success depends on the support of the parents and your dedication and hard work is evident through MEP’s consistent growth. I can only say I wish this program existed when I was at Vaucluse High School.

I am currently completing a diploma in the Music Business Industry as I’m aspiring to become a successful tour manager/band manager. I am also interested in moving into the production side of music once I have completed my current diploma. I have extensive experience in office administration and have completed a Certificate 3 in Customer Contact. Before I commenced full time study I was office manager/customer care manager for two years for a very successful and busy solar energy company.

As admin support for the RBSC MEP I will enjoy combining my music business and office administration skills. And I am really looking forward to meeting and working with all the teachers, parents and students involved in MEP. So I’ll see you around the school!
